    Description

Sam Houston, Juan Seguin, and Thomas Rusk Document Signed, "Sam Houston," "Juan Nepno. Seguin," and "Thomas J. Rusk." One page, 8" x 3.5", "Head Quarters Victoria," May 29, 1836. This document is a Texas Revolutionary Army discharge certificate for "A. Rodriguez", reading, "I certify that A. Rodriguez has served faithfully in the cause of Texas, has fought bravely and deserves the kind treatment and friendship of all Texians."

By May 29, 1836, the painful birth of the Republic of Texas seemed over. Sam Houston, together with Juan Seguin, Thomas Rusk, and the rest of the Texian army, had won the final battle of the Texas Revolution one month earlier, scoring big with the capture of Santa Anna. The Treaties of Velasco had been signed on May 14, and now, 160 miles west of the San Jacinto battlefield, this discharge certificate was issued to a Texian soldier. Texas' revolutionary army had been comprised of volunteers. Many, thought, simply left the ranks when there was no impending crisis. Houston led only 900 men into the battle at San Jacinto, certainly Rodriguez was one of those.

By the time this document was written, Seguin had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and Rusk had replaced Houston as the commander-in-chief of the army. On May 29, Houston, who had been wounded at San Jacinto, was recuperating in New Orleans from wounds received at San Jacinto (he had arrived in New Orleans on May 22), so he must have signed this certificate before his departure or afterwards. Above his signature is written, "Pay him." Toning, staining, and foxing are evident, as are repairs to fold separations.
