    Description

Roswell S. Ripley Autograph Letter Signed "R. S. Ripley." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Fort Sumter; May 27, 1861. A short letter from Lieutenant Colonel R.S. Ripley, the commander of Fort Sumter, to Colonel Edward Manigault, Chief of Ordnance. Ripley writes about the transportation of three Columbiad guns and one Howitzer gun that were damaged at Fort Sumter, and which are being send to the Ordnance office. Docketing on verso reads, "In relation to 4 guns destroyed at Fort Sumter which he sends up to us and which we don't want."

Ripley served as an officer during the Mexican-American War and as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army seeing action at Antietam and Fredericksburg. On April 12, 1861, Confederate General Beauregard, issued the ultimatum to Major Anderson for the surrender of Fort Sumter. The shelling commenced at 4:30 a.m., with the first shots coming from Fort Johnson on James Island, but Ripley's batteries on Sullivan's Island soon joined the fray. After pounding the Union garrison for 24 straight hours, Anderson was forced to surrender. Ripley later returned to Charleston in 1863 in defense against Federal forces. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light edge toning. There is mounting material residue on verso. Overall very good.
