    Description

Robert Seldon Garnett Signature, "R. S. Garnett/ Capt. 7 Inft. B Major/ Rectg. Off.", as a recruiting officer several years before becoming the first general killed in the Civil War. 7.25" x 2.5", ca. 1848. After Virginian Robert Garnett (1819-1861) graduated from West Point in 1841, he served as an instructor of infantry tactics there from 1843 through 1844. As a captain during the Mexican War, he received two brevets. Following the war, he transferred to the 7th U.S. Infantry and served a short stint as a recruiting officer.

In one of the earliest Virginia campaigns of the Civil War (July 1861), Garnett, now a Confederate brigadier general, was sorely outnumbered by Union Generals George McClellan and William Rosencrans at the Battle of Corrick's Ford. While directing a retreat, he was killed by a Union volley on the banks of the Cheat River. His death - the first of a general during the Civil War - and loss at the battle exposed the seriousness of the conflict and meant that the Union controlled western Virginia. The loss of this talented Southern officer was a great blow to the future prospects of the Confederacy.
