    Robert E. Lee Signed General Orders No. 17 with General Orders No. 3. General Orders No. 17 is one page, 4.25" x 5.75" (sight), San Antonio; October 30, 1860. Signed at the lower margin "RE Lee." Just four months before Texas seceded from the Union, Robert E. Lee, a colonel in the U.S. Army and commander of the Department of Texas, issued General Orders, No. 17, whereby the department would restrict expenses by suspending "all repairs, alterations and improvements at Posts for which special appropriations have not been made." In addition, "allowance of forage to horses and mules will be reduced to one-half of the forage ration prescribed by regulations." Matted and framed to the overall size of 10.75" x 12.75".

    With General Orders No. 3, one page, 4.75" x 7.5" (sight), Richmond; February 6, 1865. Issued by General Samuel Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederate Army, this order names General Robert E. Lee to the important position of General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States. It reads, in part: "The Congress of the Confederate States of America do enact, That there shall be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, an officer, who shall be known and designated as 'General in Chief,' who shall be ranking officer of the army, and as such, shall have command of the military forces of the Confederate States... General Robert E. Lee having been duly appointed General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States, will assume the duties thereof, and will be obeyed and respected accordingly." The documents bears a very faint ink "Rebel Archives" stamp at the upper center. Matted and framed to the overall size of 9.75" x 12.5".

    Condition: General Orders No. 17 has a flattened fold and faint foxing. Lee's signature is bold and clear. General Orders No. 3 has light edge toning and flattened folds. With light foxing and soiling.
