Robert E. Lee Signature "R. E. Lee" with transmittal letter by Mary Custis Lee (likely General Lee's wife, rather than his daughter). Lee's signature on a ruled slip (2" x .75") is in bold ink. Small pin holes exist around the signature, though none affect it. Mary Custis Lee's letter (one page, 4.75" x 8", Lexington, September 16, 1873) is simply addressed to "Sir" transmitting "an autograph of Genl Lee." Only weeks before her own death on November 5, Mrs. Lee was, apparently, running low on Lee's autographs because of the many requests for them, as she explains in this letter. The letter reads in part: "I send you an autograph of Genl. Lee this almost under protest for I have much constant applications for them. I shall be forced to decline in future for this is cut from a Bank Check & those are nearly exhausted so you will greatly oblige me by informing any of your friends who encouraged by your success may desire to make a similar application that I shall be much pained by the necessity of refusing." The letter, which bears only minor stains, has cleanly and completely separated along the folds into four pieces.
