    Robert E. Lee Manuscript Document Engrossed in Lee's Hand and Signed "R. E. Lee" as a captain of engineers. One page, 8" x 10", Fort Hamilton [New York], May 2, 1843. Captain Lee, the Fort Hamilton post engineer, signs and engrosses this manuscript monthly report for operations at Fort Lafayette, a fortification offshore from Fort Hamilton.

    At the top is written, "Monthly Report of Operations at Fort La Fayette for the month of April 1843 / Superintending Engineer Capt. R. E. Lee of the Corps of Engineers." According to the report, next month's "Probable operations" included "Painters, Painting exterior PentHouse & interior new wood work. Carpenters-Adjusting trap doors to Batteries. (written in Lee's hand]" The cash on hand as of May 1 was $1,500.

    From 1841 through 1846, Captain Lee served as Fort Hamilton's post engineer, assigned to make improvements to the fort, which was located in the in modern-day Brooklyn. He left the fort in 1846 to serve in the Mexican War. This document is docketed on verso. Minor separation along two folds. On lined paper with minor soiling.
