    Robert E. Lee Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75" (sight), Headquarters Army, Northern Virginia; January 29, 1863. In this letter to the Honorable H. W. Sheffey, Lee refuses Sheffey's request to transfer Willie K. Chapman of Company A of the 13th Virginia Regiment to the cavalry service. It reads in part: "Your letter...asking the transfer of W.K. Chapman Co A. 13th Va Infty to the cavalry service was referred to his Commanding Officers and referred to me as you will perceive by...the remarks of all the officers disapproving of the transfer. It would give me great pleasure to grant the transfer could I do so consistently with the good of the service; and I hope that the statements of the Officers referred to, will satisfy you of my inability to comply with your request with propriety." Signed, "R E Lee / Genl." It is matted, framed and double-glazed with Sheffey's original letter requesting the transfer dated December 13, 1862. The overall size is 20.75" x 15.5". Not examined outside of the frame.

    Condition: Letter has separated along the folds. Some minor areas of soiling with age toning. Sheffey's letter has toning and soiling with a 2" open tear to the bottom margin.
