Robert E. Lee Certification of Receipt Signed "R E Lee" as a Captain of Engineers. One partially printed slip, 8" x 2.75", circa August 1838. He signs certifying "That the service charged in the within account has been rendered, were necessary for, and has been or will be applied, for the objects within stated, to the Improvement of the Harbor of St. Louis." Three printed words have been scratched out and replaced in holograph. The verso of the document lists an expenditure to Christian Warner, dated August 9, 1838, "For launching a Scon from the shore of... [words cut off]".

Before commanding the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War, Robert E. Lee served for twenty-six years in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Beginning in 1837, he was appointed supervising engineer for navigation on the Mississippi River based in St. Louis, Missouri. Here he oversaw work on the St. Louis harbor, the Missouri River, and the creation of a channel through the Des Moines Rapids near Keokuk, Iowa. For his efforts, he received a captain's commission.

Condition: Lightly toned, slight chipping at edges, areas of tearing and paper loss at top right corner. Small pencil annotation at lower left corner. Tape on verso reinforces a small hole.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
