    Description

Robert E. Lee Autograph Letter Signed "R E Lee." One page, 5.25" x 8", Lexington [Virginia], February 13, 1869. Writing to M.L. Karr of Carrollton, Kentucky, in response to an earlier letter from Mr. Karr informing the general that he has named his young son after him, Lee writes, in full: "I am much obliged to you for the photograph of my young namesake. I trust that his present appearance betokens the future man. He has my fervent prayers that his course through life may be marked by truthfulness, integrity, & piety, & that virtue & usefulness may be his constant aim. With kindest regards to yourself & Mrs. Karr." With the original transmittal envelope accomplished entirely in Lee's hand. Usual folds. Separation of the folds has been expertly repaired on the verso. Evidence of mat burn around the edges. Few scattered spots of foxing.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
