    Description

    Robert E. Lee Autograph Document Signed "R E Lee." One page, 3.25" x 4.75", "Hd Qts 2 Cavy," Louisville, May 7, 1855. In full: "Bt Col R E Lee/Lt Col 2 Cavy/ Requisition for clothing for Comp. 'A' 'B''C' 'D' & 'K' 2nd Regt of Cavy."

Lee's promotion to Lieutenant Colonel of the recently approved, but as of yet unorganized, Second United States Cavalry was viewed as his chance to escape the never-ending succession of desk jobs provided by the Engineering Corps and finally hold a field command. He, along with the other officers of the regiment, was handpicked by then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. The regiment was organized on May 28, 1855 before heading to its permanent post in Texas, where it remained until the outbreak of the Civil War. Very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
