Robert E. Lee: A Handwritten Letter with Signed Carte de Visite Photo. The companion piece to the adjacent letter, written four years later. Mrs. R. L. Johnston, wife of the Confederate Colonel, has written to Lee to report on the progress of their four year old son who was named after the General. Lee responds, "I appreciate the compliment you have paid me in bestowing my name on your bright little boy, whose career in life I hope may be useful and happy. I am much obliged to you for his photograph in in poor return send him my own."

Included with the letter is that photo, signed below Lee's portrait. On verso, Lee has written "Robert Lee Johnston." The letter is written in black ink on lined 4.75" x 7.75" paper, and the photo is also signed in ink. Both are in excellent condition save for a small corner creases on the CDV and a minor glue stain across the top edge of the letter. The pair display together beautifully.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
