    Description

Robert Anderson Autograph Quotation Signed "Robert Anderson." One small slip, 4.75" x 1.75", New York; December 14, 1863. Anderson has written out the following: "God bless and restore our beloved Union."

Robert Anderson (1805-1871) was in command at Fort Sumter and was forced to surrender following the Confederate's bombardment of the fort in April 1861. Anderson's defense of the fort made him a national hero, and he was promoted to brigadier general. He then set about aiding with recruitment and toured the country for a period of time before briefly becoming the commanding officer at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island in 1863. Anderson officially retired from the Army on October 27, 1863. After Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Anderson was invited to raise the 33-star American flag at Fort Sumter once more.

Condition: Pencil notations at the top left and lower left corner. Light soiling and uneven toning. There is mounting residue and remnants on verso.
