    Revolutionary War Receipts (3) for Supplies for Captain Edward Ellis' Company, Including One Signed by Black Soldiers. Includes:
    Manuscript document (7.25" x 4.25") issued in Glastonbury on November 6, 1777 for "three blankets containing fifteen yards" of material from the Selectmen of the town. Signed by Ezra Tryon, and by Cyphan and Newport who sign with their marks. "Negro" is written next to their names.

    Manuscript document (8" x 7") issued to the Selectmen of Glastonbury, in Hartford on November 11, 1777 for "1 gun procured for Ashbel Webster... 3 blankets... and 11 Days spent in furnishing soldiers.

    Manuscript receipt (5" x 4") listing payments to various officers, including Captain Ellis who receives 12 shillings for 2 days' subsistence on May 2. Signed at bottom by Selectman Timothy Hale.

    As many as 400 black soldiers fought in Connecticut's Continental Army during the war. Most black soldiers fought with integrated forces, as was the case with Ellis' regiment, but occasionally all-black units were formed.

    Condition: All three documents are gently toned, with bold ink.
