    Description

Revolutionary War Naval Bond for the Brig Minerva. One page, 7.75" x 13", Connecticut, September 11, 1775. Following the first battles of the American Revolutionary War in 1775, the Connecticut General Assembly authorized the procurement and outfitting of two armed ships. After a meeting in July between Governor Jonathan Trumbull and the assembly's Council of Safety, many in the public began to oppose the "navy," certainly with the might of the British navy in mind. Still, Governor Trumbull and the council voted to outfit the Minerva, a 108-ton ship, and place it under the command of Giles Hall, who hired forty sailors and as many marines. This bond reads in part:

"Know all Men by these Presents that we Andrew Johonnot and Benjamin Henshaw both of Middletown in the County of Hartford and Colony of Connecticut are held and firmly bound unto the Governor and Company of the Colony of Connecticut aforesaid in the penal Sum of Two Thousand Pounds lawful money to be paid to the said Governor and Company. . . . The Condition of this Bond is such That Whereas the said Andrew Johonnot is appointed Steward of the Armed Brigantine Minerva in the Service of this Colony." The bond continued that if Johonnot rendered "a true and faithfull account of all such Sum or Sums of money as he shall receive out of the Colony Treasury for the Use of said Brigantine when the thereunto required then the foregoing Bond is to be void, otherwise to be and remain in full force."

The bond is signed by Johonnot, Henshaw, Hezekiah Hosmer, and Titus Hosmer, who was a delegate from Connecticut to the Continental Congress in 1778 and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. Docketed. Toned paper with two small seals next to Johonnot and Henshaw's signatures.
