Rare Confederate General George E. Pickett Autographed Letter Signed An October 1, 1856 letter with military content written at "Mil. Post Bellingham Bay." (Washington Territory) 7.75" x 9.75" on light blue textured letter paper. Extremely fine but has two fine horizontal creases as originally folded. He writes to an unidentified army Colonel, requesting that copies of the Ordnance Regulation and Ordnance Manual be forwarded for the use of CO. D, 9th Infy., and signs "G E Pickett Capt 9th Inf." As an army Captain, Pickett was assigned to frontier duty in Washington Territory from 1856 to 1861, during which time he was almost constantly engaged in fighting hostile Indians. He left the service in 1861 to join the Confederate cause, rising to the rank of Major General. He continued an active role in the War until he surrendered with Longstreet at Appomattox. Pickett is best remembered for his command of "Pickett 's Charge," a desperate direct assault against the heavily fortified center of the Union lines along Cemetery Ridge at the Battle of Gettysburg. Some three-fourths of his 4500 men fell in the attack, which stopped short of the Union Lines at a rail and store fence, forever known as the "High Watermark of the Confederacy." Had Pickett's Charge broken the Union Center, the Battle would undoubtedly have been won by the Confederates, would then been in a powerful position to force an end to the War. Pickett's autographs and handwriting are scarce and much in demand, and this is a beautiful example with very pleasing display presence. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
