Rafael Vasquez Manuscript Document Signed Regarding Indian Attacks on the Mail. Manuscript DS with printed heading "Comandancia Gral. E Inspeccion de Coahuila y Tejas. Mesa", 2pp., 6.5" x 9.75", Saltillo, April 4, 1846. Manuscript document requesting that all mail be sent in duplicate because of the Indian attacks on the mail to the 'frontera', ie. Texas.

Rafael Vasquez (1804-1854) was Mexican general and in command of centralist forces. Appointed a brevet general in 1839, he later sought to draw a force of Texans and Mexicans serving with Antonio Canales Rosillo in the Republic or Rio Grande into an ambush in Saltillo. On March 5, 1842, Vasquez with a force of 700 men, took occupation of San Antonio. The townspeople, unable to resist Vasquez's force, simply surrendered; allowing Vasquez to raise the Mexican flag and declare Mexican law. Two days later on March 7, Vasquez and his troops would depart back into Mexico. His two day infraction would be viewed as a guerilla attack and gave way to the Somervell and Mier expeditions. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
