Great content ALS, 6pp., May 28, 1845, replying to a complaint by citizens of Santa Rosa against the military. He refers to the docility of a local judge and explains that the law provides conditions under which civilians are obligated to aid the military. Also, discusses suffering of the people and the neglect of the government in small towns and commends the dedication of the people of Santa Rosa to defense. States that in 1840-1841 there were resolutions between the military and Judge which can be used as a guide until the government resolves the question, and that Gen. Arista has issued a circular to that effect. Two page ALS, June 11, 1845 with good content stating that the government has issued a resolution on lending help to the military leaders who request it from civil authorities and the general public. Letter also discusses a need to encourage harmony among military, civilians and civil authorities. A two page ALS dated Jan. 26, 1848, with a postscript sending thanks regarding an Indian Campaign, thanking the recipient for distinguished service. Manuscript copy of a letter of commendation signed by Tomas Talamantes for service in the Indian Campaign along the Rio Bravo against the Lipanes. Commendation states that they caused great suffering amongst the Indians including deprivation of food, clothing, etc... and as a result the Indians will now seek peace. Overall condition is very good to near fine with dampstaining to 1839 letter. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
