Pinckney Coatsworth Caldwell Autograph Receipt for a Horse. One page, 8" x 5.75". No place, no date. Written entirely by Caldwell: "This is to certify that I pressed in to the servis [sic] of the Texas Army a Sorrel Horse the property of John Pyle valued by Capt. Smith & Lieut Nelson at fifty dollars for which the Government is responsible to Pyl for [signed] P Caldwell Qr Master Texas Army."

Caldwell (1795-1840) arrived in Texas in December 1830. He was one of the defenders at the Battle of Gonzales. Caldwell served as quartermaster throughout much of the Revolution, including at the Battle of San Jacinto. As it is undated, it is not possible to date the receipt offered here. Caldwell was killed in 1840 during an Indian raid at Victoria.

Condition: Uneven toning, with a repair made on verso resulting in some staining on recto. Light soiling throughout. Uneven edges, and a previous collector's notes on front.
