Pierre G.T. Beauregard Autograph Letter Signed. One and a quarter pages, 5" x 8"; "Hd Quarters Department N. Carolina and Southern Virginia / Near Petersburg, Va. July 10th 1864." A letter of commendation to Cornelius Boyle, thanking him for his service. "I take pleasure in acknowledging your service whilst under my orders as Provost Marshal of the Army of the Potomac at Manassas, from about the middle of July 1861 to the end of Jan[uar]y 1862, when I was transferred to the command of the Army of Western Tennessee. During that period you discharged the laborious duties of your position with zeal & intelligence, although preferring at the time to be in the field with your proper command... thereby sacrificing your chances of personal advancement... G T Beauregard / General."

Cornelius Boyle was a wealthy doctor and landowner. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he left his medical practice and business interests in Washington, D.C. and joined the Confederacy, assuming the post of Provost Marshall, but also engaged in espionage. The letter is marked "Copy" at the top, and may indicate that the original letter was submitted elsewhere for official purposes. There is no doubt that this copy is in Beauregard's hand, indicating the importance Boyle held in the Confederacy.

Condition: Gently toned, with a tiny separation occurring at edge of vertical fold. Left margin is a bit rough. A few stray spots of foxing along top.
