Paul Tibbets, Pilot of the Enola Gay, Statement Signed "Paul Tibbets." One page, 8.5" x 11", no place; no date. Signed in blue ink. The statement is an excerpt from a "USA Today" interview, in which Tibbets talks about the lead up to the bombing. When asked how he got involved in the mission, Tibbets responds: "I was called into the office of the commanding general of the 2nd Air Force. He said, 'This is your assignment,' and I saluted him and said, 'Yes sir'." When asked if he was nervous, Tibbets responds, "Not the least...I was shot in the ass with confidence. There wasn't anything I couldn't do." With further comments on how Tibbets believes that the bomb ultimately saved American and Japanese lives, as it precluded an invasion of Japan.

    Condition: Boldly signed.
