Nathaniel Lyon War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed with Rank. One page, 7.75" x 7.25". "Huffman's crossing of Osage River just above the mouth of Sack [Sac] River"; July 10, 1861. Writing days after the Battle of Carthage to Franz Sigel:

"I have heard of your fight with Jackson & regret I could not have supported you. Get all your forces together so as to sustain yourself, and if you cannot join me hang on Jackson's flank or rear if he advances to meet me. I have to cross both this and the Grand River, which is 20 miles back and where my trains are still crossing, by means of Ferrying, which is a very slow process. I hope to get off however in two or three days more and before I can get more provisions from you or from Springfield I shall be short as I have now but six days rations. Call on Gen. Sweeny at Springfield to support you & yours Respectfully N. Lyon Brig Genl Comg."

War dated letters of Lyon are rare, and this particular missive is significant as it shows his intent to support Sigel's forces. Lyon was killed the following month during the Battle of Wilson's Creek. War-dated letters by Lyon are scarce; the letter offered here is exceptionally so because of its content.

Condition: Usual mail folds, very light uneven toning along edges. Chipping and tearing along edges, with a small amount of paper loss. Pencil notations on verso.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
