Nathaniel Lyon Autograph Letter Signed with Indian Content. Three pages with integral cover, 8" x 10", Monterey, California; April 30, 1850. A letter to George A. Tisdale outlining a planned campaign in response to the recent murder of an officer. In part:

"You have probably heard of various Indian outrages upon white men committed in this country among which was the murder of Capt. Warner of the Topographical Corps - in consequence of which a party has been detailed to visit these Indians & if necessary punish them for their conduct but a recent order from Washington detailing a Court Martial in Oregon takes three officers of the expedition against the Indians & I am assigned to duty with it & will leave today for Benicia via San Francisco. The party is to start from Benicia & proceed northerly to Clear Lake where the 1st Tribe is located & if the expedition is successful against them it is to proceed further north to the Oregon line where Capt. Warner was killed & call those Indians to an account before returning-whether we have time this year to accomplish all this will no doubt depend upon our success in progressing & as soldiering is at so low ebb in this country all military operations tho they be conceived in wisdom depend for success upon contingencies that give little encouragement & leave the future a problem to be developed by time-that this solution of it may be a successful one is of course my highest hope at present & if opportunity affords I will give you some account of us in the rout..."

He also briefly mentions the rising tensions in the country surrounding the issue of slavery, saying, "On March 15th we have Mr. Webster, Calhoun, Seward & other men of great speeches on the Slavery question. I think things look like a settlement of the question without 'the resort to the last extremity' as the Southerners have it."

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning and spotting, primarily at edges. Small amount of paper loss on third page, affects very little of the text. Overall very fine.
