    Description

Mirabeau B. Lamar Partially Printed Document Signed "Mirabeau B. Lamar" as president of the Republic of Texas, One page, 10" x 7.75", October 1, 1840, Austin, Texas. The document is a $500 Republic of Texas government bond issued to Charles DeMorse and countersigned by Acting Texas Treasury Secretary William Sevey.

Mirabeau B. Lamar was the second president of the Republic of Texas and Charles DeMorse was the young republic's stock commissioner. DeMorse had the task of attempting to fund and bond the public debt. He also served in the Texas Army and the Texas Navy and practiced law in Matagorda and Austin. During the Civil War, DeMorse served as the colonel of the 29th Texas Cavalry Regiment. Today, he is known as "The Father of Texas Journalism." This attractive bond features vignettes of a farmer plowing the fields, an American Indian, and a lone star. It was produced by the Southern Bank Note Company of New Orleans and still retains ten interest stubs at the bottom. The usual cut cancellations, else fine.
