One page, 7.75" x 9.75" (sight), on Corcoran's Irish Legion letterhead, Staten Island [New York], October 4, 1862, to Adjutant General Thomas Hillhouse requesting the promotion of three men, one of which was, until recently, under arrest. He writes, in part: "I respectfully submit for confirmation the name of James B. Kirker as Quartermaster of the 69th Regiment N.Y.S.M . . . Lieut. Kirker having been acting as Quartermaster . . . I also nominate for the Majority of the 2nd Regt of my Brigade Colonel Peter McDermott . . . For the Adjutancy . . . I hereby designate Patrick McCarthy who has been acting as Adjutant at this post since the 8th September 1862 . . . After further consideration and investigation, I have concluded to release Colonel McDermott from arrest, and restore him to his command." Smoothed folds; small spot of staining at lower left. Text is very light, but legible. Corcoran's signature is bold and bright.

Michael Corcoran (1827-1863) was colonel of the 69th New York Regiment. He led the regiment at the First Manassas, but was captured. Paroled, he was later promoted to brigadier general and formed his own brigade, Corcoran's Irish Legion. He was killed on December 22, 1863, when, out riding alone, his horse fell on him. Matted with a 3.25" x 7.75" (sight) sheet docketing the information in the letter and an oval portrait of Corcoran to an overall size of 31.25" x 21.25".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
