    Mexican War Related: Three Letters, written by William W. Bliss and Thomas Spencer to Aristarchus Champion, all dated 1849 or 1850, concerning Mexican claims, New York real estate prices, "the road to Lake Erie", and art purchases. Very good condition.

    Thomas Spencer Autograph Letter Signed to Aristarchus Champion. Three pages, April 10, 1849, New York, with two newspaper clippings concerning Mexican claims and the rise in New York State real estate prices.

     

    William W. Bliss Autograph Letter Signed to Aristarchus Champion, three pages, January 13, 1849, concerning bonds and "the road to Lake Erie".

     

    William W. Bliss Autograph Letter Signed to Aristarchus Champion, three pages, December 4, 1850, concerning painting purchases.

     

    During the Mexican War, Bliss was chief of staff to General Zachary Taylor. He took an active part in the engagements of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Pahna, Monterey, and Buena Vista. In 1848, 33-year-old Colonel Bliss married Mary Elizabeth Taylor, General Taylor's 24-year-old daughter; he served as secretary to his father-in-law during Taylor's short presidency. Fort Bliss, at San Antonio, is named for William Bliss.
