    Mexican War: Battle of Buena Vista, a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 16.5" x 11", with margins 20.5" x 15". At left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.". At right beneath image: "Bayot lith." The colorplate has excellent color and detail and contains light foxing and is in fine condition. The lithograph is affixed to a stiff paperboard backing.

    The dramatic Battle of Buena Vista depicts General Taylor's men in the foreground, with Santa Anna's massive forces of 20,000 men receding into the vast horizon. Largely outnumbered, Taylor refused to surrender to Santa Anna. The Mexican forces would eventually retreat claiming victory at the cost of 3500 Mexican soldiers versus 650 American dead.
