Mexican Army - J. Alvares Autograph Document Signed Regarding Payment of the Troops. ADS "J. Alvares" on letterhead stamped "Commissary of the Army of the North", one page with conjoined sheet, 8.5" x 11", Guerrero, June 18, 1843. J. Alvarez advises Captain Jesus de la Garza that General Antonio Jaurequi is departing for the Monclova division with 25,000 pesos to pay all that is owed and to give what remains to the Division. Also, that when General Reyes returns the receipt for December, he will speak to the Commander General so that it can be paid as well. Document is in near fine condition with creamy color and a second letterhead stamping on the conjoined sheet.

It was common practice for the wealthier officers to float loans to pay the troops. The 25,000 pesos being sent to the Monclova division is clearly first to settle the debt with Garza, with the balance to be used to pay the troops. This would likely result in additional loans, creating a cycle of debt. The troops, in addition to being poorly armed and maintained, would typically go for long periods of time without pay. From the Taking of Texas Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
