Maryland Militia Bill of 1793. Four pages with printed text, 8.25" x 13.25", [Annapolis 1793]. This scarce militia bill was pending in the Maryland Assembly as "An Act to arrange, regulate and discipline, the militia of this state, according to an act of the congress of the United States, entitled, An act more effectually to provide for the national defence, by establishing an uniform militia throughout the United States." The bill spells out in exacting detail the regulations of the state concerning militia eligibility ("all able bodied white male citizens, between eighteen and forty-five years of age"). The bill also orders returns to be made listing such individuals, setting fines for non-compliance, establishing exercise and review days, and setting the general organization of the state militia as a whole. This might have been the first act regulating the militia in Maryland under the new federal constitution. The docket on the final page, however, indicates that this version did not pass the state senate: "Negatived by the Senate - Nov 1793."Toned along horizontal folds.
