A War-Dated Letter to Fellow Confederate General, John C. Breckinridge

Martin Luther Smith Autograph Letter Signed With a Postscript Signed With Initials. Two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 7.75". No date, but docketed July 25, 1862. A letter marked "Private" addressed to fellow Confederate General John C. Breckinridge: "I enclose a note from Col Starks and have to request that you give such instruction as may assist Col Starks in his endeavors to catch the faulty parties. I suppose it to being difficult in an irregular encampment, such as the nature of the country compels to keep soldiers in their tents after 'taps'. The Officers may do something perhaps by increased watchfulness... [signed] M.L. Smith Brig Gen'l." Smith adds a 4 line postscript, and signs for a second time with his initials. Accompanied by an engraving of Smith.

Condition: Flattened folds, with light soiling thereat on external integral sheet. Few stray ink marks, otherwise near fine. Letter is encapsulated for safe keeping, which can be removed.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
