    Major Robert Anderson: Personally Inscribed Artillery Textbook From the Author. "Evolutions of Field Batteries of Artillery, Translated from the French and Arranged for the Army and Militia of the United States" by Robert Anderson, 1st Regt. Art. U. S. Army, New York, D. Van Nostrand, 1860, 179pp, bound in red pebbled leather with self-closing flap (3" x 4.5"). The flyleaf is inscribed: "Col. R. Delafield/ from yr. friend/ Robert Anderson/ W Point/ Aug 22/60." Anderson was an artillery professor at West Point who gained renown as the commander of Ft. Sumter at the start of hostilities of the Civil War. Richard Delafield was the Commandant at West Point and later Chief Engineer of the U. S. Army. In 1860, his residence at West Point caught fire. There is some fire damage (scorching) to part of the cover, which also exhibits some chipping and wear. The text is in very fine condition.
