"I respectfully ask that you issue an order stopping this d__m Mortar from inside the rebel lines..."

Major General John A. Logan Autograph Letter Signed "John A. Logan - In Trouble". One page, 7.75" x 9.75", [Vicksburg], "At the place where Head Qrs was Early this morning", June 19, 1863, to [General John Aaron] Rawlins. With folds and scattered ink stains, else fine.

You can almost hear the sound of Confederate artillery and feel Logan's anxiety in this amazing letter as he writes General Rawlins seeking his help to silence a large Confederate mortar that is wrecking havoc on the positions of 3rd Division. The letter reads, in part: "I respectfully ask that you issue an order stopping this d__m Mortar from inside the rebel lines. If you do not the 3rd Division is give up. My Hd. Qrs. Are thoroughly demoralized & cut to pieces. One of the infernal shells has just torn my Hd. Qrs. Tents to pieces destroyed watches, tables trunks & various valuables. There were no [illegible] in store. If you can not stop the thing I must have reinforcements from some other Hd. Qrs. Respectfully, John A. Logan In Trouble". A fine letter, with exceptional content.
