Major General Charles Lee Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, folded down to 6.25" x 8". New York, February 28, [1776]. Lee writes to General Philip Schuyler, written just after Lee was named to succeed Schuyler in the command of the Northern Department. In full: "I have inclos'd to you a letter to General Worcester [David Wooster] informing of my appointment - I have order'd the Commanding Officer of Crown Point to send down to Sorel [Canada] a certain number of Cannon of which inclos'd is a list, but as they cannot be transported without your assistance from Albany, I must request therefore that you will apply to the Committee there for horses and the necessary carriages for their transportation. You are a much better judge than I can possibly be of the nature of these carriages, whether they should be slays [sleds] or what they should be - I shall see you in a very few days, have much to say to you on the subject of N. York. You must forward my letters. Adieu, My D[ea]r General, take ease of your health. Yours - C. Lee." Schuyler was suffering from severe gout and not very active in the war, however he remained involved in sending supplies from Albany during the Canadian invasion. The day after this letter, Congress changed Lee's orders, and he was instead given command of the Southern Department. In December 1776, Lee was captured at Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He remained a prisoner in New York until April 1778. A few areas of ink smudges, and some ink burn at top and bottom. Docketed on verso.
