    Major General Abner Doubleday Civil War Clipped Signature "A. Doubleday / Major Genl. Vol.". 2.5" x 1", mounted to a 4" x 2.5" backing sheet. A crisp example in very good condition. Doubleday aimed the cannon that fired the first return shot in answer to the Confederate bombardment on Fort Sumter. He also played a pivotal role at Gettysburg, when he assumed command of I Corps and briefly held off superior Confederate forces at Cemetery Hill.
