    Description

    Lt. Col. Rufus R. Dawes Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 8.75", "Hd. Qrs. 6th Wis. Vols," December 16, 1863, to the adjutant general of Wisconsin requesting blank forms "to enable families, dependant [sic] on Soldiers for support" to receive five dollars a month. Dawes (1838-1899) commanded the 6th Wisconsin Regiment in the Iron Brigade and took part in many battles, including Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and the Siege of Petersburg. Smoothed folds. Two small spots of staining.
