    Description

Judah P. Benjamin Slave Document Signed "Benjamin." One page, 7.75" x 11", n.d. (the verso states that the document was "filed April 27th 1843"), n.p. This parish court document states, "The defendants offer in evidence the record of the First . . . to prove that the mortgage given by Mrs. Lefebre to her son produced nothing . . . having absorbed the entire proceeds of the property. It is admitted that at and before and since the sale of the slaves by Mrs. Lefebre to her son, they have lived together and that the slaves were her domestic servants."

Judah Benjamin of Louisiana resigned his seat in the U.S. Senate when the Civil War began (he was only the second Jewish senator in U.S. history). He was appointed the Confederate attorney general in early 1861; later he served at different times as the Confederate secretary of war and secretary of state.
