Judah P. Benjamin Letter Signed "J. F. Benjamin.." One page, 8" x 10", Richmond, January 24, 1862, on "Confederate States of America, War Department" letterhead to Colonel Thomas J. Foster at Fort Heiman, Tennessee ("near Fort Henry"). In this letter, Confederate Secretary of War Benjamin authorizes Colonel Foster to "to complete the organization of the troops now under your command into a Regiment, as soon as 10 companies are rendezvoused. The Companies may elect their own field officers, and the muster Rolls, and nominations for Staff Officers, must be forwarded immediately."

Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884) had a long and varied public career. His service in the Louisiana state legislature, the U.S. Senate (where he was the second Jew to serve), and the C.S.A. cabinet (as attorney general, secretary of war, and secretary of state) makes his material very appealing to a wide range of collectors. Thomas Jefferson Foster (1809-1887) was a politician who served as the first colonel of the new regiment mentioned in the above letter, the 27th Alabama. The regiment experienced several battles and was consolidated with four other regiments near the end of the war. Instrumental in the initial construction of Fort Henry on the Tennessee River, Foster served as an Alabama congressman later in the war. On lined paper with folds.
