Judah P. Benjamin, Confederate Secretary of War: An Important ALS on Confederate War Department Letterhead. Judah P. Benjamin items are always popular with Civil War, Manuscripts and Judaica collectors. His signature alone is scarce, his letters more so. Rarely does one encounter a letter in this form, with nice content and the original envelope of transmittal.

On February 17, 1862, he writes in full to one G. W. Humphries in Port Gibson, Mississippi:

"Your dispatch to the President [Jefferson Davis] has been referred to me. In reply I inform you that I have already accepted as many companies of Light Artillery as can advantageously be deployed."

Perhaps a couple more years into the War Benjamin may have had cause to regret turning this offer down. The letter (7.75" x 9.75") and envelope are in excellent condition, and are accompanied by an Anthony/Brady carte de visite of Benjamin trimmed at the bottom.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
