    Josiah Tattnall Undated General Order Document Signed "Josiah Tattnall". One page, 7.75" x 10", no place indicated, undated. Fine condition.

    With the rank of flag officer Josiah Tattnall (1794-1871) signs "General Order No. 1" which reads in part: "From the 15th of June to the 20th of October all Comdg. Officers will Strictly observe the following "Sanitary Order" The men are to be protected as far as is compatible with the duties of the Service "from the power of the sun" "night dews" and "heavy rains". The document prescribes other sanitary requirements for crews on active service. Tattnall led a distinguished naval career which began in the War of 1812 and included service in the Mexican-American War. Though he opposed session, he resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy on February 21, 1861 and received a commission as captain in the Confederate navy. He was captured during the fall of Savannah and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war.
