    Description

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Autograph Letter Signed "J. L. Chamberlain." Two pages, 5" x 8", Brunswick [Maine], August 30, 1894. In this letter, Chamberlain, most noted for his heroism at the Battle of Gettysburg, thanks a "Dear Friend" (likely a Mr. Lawrence of New York) for his suggestions to help find employment for a "Miss [Lillian] Edwards," an art student at the Institute for Artists and Artisans, a struggling New York school where Chamberlain served as president during the early 1890s. The letter exhibits some minor wrinkles to the paper; folds.

In part: "I got home last evening from a yacht cruise... I hasten to acknowledge your genuine interest in Miss Edwards behalf... I feel confident knowing her work & her ability-that she will most successfully fulfill the conditions & demands of the place you so kindly suggest... We are making a strenuous effort to carry the school on."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
