A partially printed promissory note where Chamberlain agrees to pay the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company $147.95. Signed at bottom, "J. L. Chamberlain." It is matted and framed with an image of Chamberlain in uniform to the overall size of 12" x 15". A copy of the verso of the note is affixed to the back of the frame. Not examined outside of the frame.
Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914) won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg, and was elevated to the rank of brigadier general by Grant for his actions at the Battle of Petersburg. Chamberlain went on to become one of Maine's leading citizens, serving as governor (1867-1871) and as president of Bowdoin College (1871-1883).
