    Description

Joseph Hooker War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 9.75" (sight), Washington, September 18, 1863. Three months prior to the writing of this letter, and three days before the battle of Gettysburg, Hooker had been replaced by General George Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac after getting into a dispute with Army headquarters. During the disagreement, he hastily offered his resignation which was promptly accepted. Writing to A. L. Goodman, he replies to Goodman's query, in full: "I have the honor to acknowledge your letter of the 12th inst and can only state in answer, that the principles involved in the pending struggle are as broad as the universe and eternal."

Earlier in the spring, a cocky Joseph Hooker, commanding the Army of the Potomac, had the misfortune to be thrashed by Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville, leading to a loss of confidence in his abilities by President Lincoln which was exacerbated by his actions during the subsequent three months. Hooker had been ordered to find Lee and stop him as he headed up the Shenandoah Valley in his invasion of Pennsylvania. Despite his removal, he received a Thanks of Congress for his part in the Gettysburg Campaign.

Smoothed folds; light toning around the edges. Corners are wrinkled slightly and the letter exhibits light ink smudging from folding. Matted and framed to an overall size of 9" x 11.5".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
