Joseph E. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed "J. E. Johnston." Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, May 5, 1881. Johnston had just left Congress (after serving one term) two months before. He writes in answer to a question about weaponry, particularly the use of the lance, used during the late Civil War, in part:

"The lance & pike-heads represented by the photograph you were kind enough to send me, could not have been made under the direction of Military Officers, I judge from their clumsiness. I did not see or hear of the use of those weapons in the recent war. Those that you refer to, were no doubt made in the South early in the war, from an apprehension that a supply of fire arms could not be had.

"The lance is certainly a valuable weapon for cavalry. Napoleon had no better light cavalry than his Polish Lancers.

"I have never had reason to believe that 'primed or explosive bullets were used on either side in the war...' And I think their use inadmissible because they would increase suffering without contributing to victory. It is for this reason probably, that they have never been adopted by civilized nations."

    Marginally toned with chipped edges.
