José Maria Tornel Manuscript Letter Signed on Ministry of War and Marine letterhead, with an elaborate engraving. One page, 8" x 10", National Palace of Mexico, March 10, 1843; a personal letter to Jose M. de Ortega, Commanding General of Nuevo Leon, asking that he consider a forthcoming letter from Antonio Garay. With usual mail folds, and even toning; in near fine condition.

José Maria Tornel (1795-1853) greatly influenced the course of Texas history in several respects. It is generally believed that it was Tornel who influenced the passing of the Guerrero Decree by President Vicente R. Guerrero, which abolished slavery throughout the Republic of Mexico (except in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec). The abolishment of slavery was hoped to decrease the influx of immigration from the United States. A strong supporter of Santa Anna, it was he who issued the order that those joining the Texas Army would be executed, in January 1836. The following month, he ordered the closing of the ports of Matagorda, Lavaca, San Luis, Galveston, Brazoria, Harrisburg, Goliad, Copano, and Anahuac, and all roads into Texas. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
