Jose Antonio Fernandez Manuscript Signed Regarding Unrest in Texas. Manuscript DS on letterhead stamped "Gobierno del Departamento de Tamaulipas", 2pp., 8.5" x 12", December 4, 1835, to officials at Reynosa on the Rio Grande stating that the government will exempt its citizens from military service. In part: "...The government will take special care to exempt the residents from military service in the squadrons which need replacements, leaving them in their homes to defend that town while it is suffering hostilities by the barbarous Indians and it [the government] is unable to furnish armed forces which should be placed there to repel them... they will not be called to military service as long as they remain in this sad situation and from which the government cannot extricate them without neglecting the essential business in Texas, in which it so suits our interests to continue to chasten the perfidious colonists who have risen against the nation which so generously clasped them to its breast..." Signed by Fernandez as Governor, adding his rubric; and countersigned by Francisco Villaseñor. The forces of Mexico were stretched thin by insurrections all along its borders. This manuscript gives evidence to the commitment made by Mexico to quell the rebellion in Texas, at all costs. Severe dampstaining does not affect legibility, with some paper loss not affecting text. Good condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
