John Pope War Date Autograph Letter Signed "Jno. Pope." Two pages, 8" x 9.75", on Head-Quarters, Department of the Northwest letterhead, Milwaukee, October 19, 1863, to Mrs. L. Trumbull (wife of Illinois Senator Lyman Trumbull), Chicago. General Pope lauds the work of "loyal ladies of the country" for their support of the welfare of Union soldiers. Mild toning, with a few separations in the folds, else fine condition.

    More Information:

In part: "The most tormenting anxiety of the soldier who has left his home to fight the battles of his country, is for the welfare & support of the family he has left behind him and it is not too much to say that this very natural feeling, founded, in many cases, upon bitter experience of carelessness and neglect on which he had no control has been the occasion of more encouragement and discontent in the Army than all other causes combined."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
