    Description

John Pelham Book Title Page Signed "Cadet John Pelham/ Alexandria/ Ala." One page, 4.75" x 7.5". Cadet Pelham has signed the top of page 301 of a book printed in French. The page has a short biography of Saint-Lambert, a French poet and the lover of Voltaire's mistress. The page is matted and framed to an overall size of 10" x 12.5". The page is toned; fine condition.

Letters and signatures by the "Gallant Pelham" are rare. Though he attended West Point for five years, he left only weeks before his graduation to serve in the Confederate military. He distinguished himself as an energetic, disciplined, brave, and skillful artillerist, serving in over sixty battles with J. E. B. Stuart. At Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Sharpsburg, he especially distinguished himself, reaping praise from Stonewall Jackson and General Lee. But he was killed during a cavalry charge at Kelly's Ford on March 17, 1863. The loss of the talented soldier was mourned especially by General Stuart, who named his third child after him.
