John Moulton Maritime Archive, dated from the mid-1790s to the very early-1800s and consisting of over seventy letters and documents from the personal papers of John Moulton, a New England sea captain. He hailed from Newburyport, Massachusetts, a shipbuilding center. The letters are either to or from Moulton. In one letter to his wife dated 1805, Moulton explains to his wife that he will be away for twelve months and expects to return to find that his sons are little men. In a letter dated 1806, Richard Flinn informs Moulton that war has been declared by the United States against Spain, and, as a result, some ships are being armed. The letters contain more than just maritime information; for example, they also contain information about American and European events. The documents consist of numerous invoices, such as a 1794 invoice for twenty-two hogsheads of cod shipped aboard the brig Nancy bound for Hispaniola. Other invoices are included for tea, sugar, tobacco, cotton, barley, and more. Other documents included are bills of lading, instructions for the sale of sugar, receipts, ships' accounts (which include port charges, sailing license, and funeral expenses), and more. This large and fascinating collection is worthy of much further research. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
