    John M. Swisher Second Class "B" Public Debt Certificate Signed "Jno M. Swisher." One partially-printed page, 10.5" x 10", Austin, October 31, 1853, for a claim from a soldier who fought under Greenberry Horras Harrison in 1839, likely during the Cherokee War of 1839. This document certifies that "John Robinson . . . filed with the Auditor and Comptroller A claim for services rendered as 1st Lieut. In Capt. G. H. Harrison's Company in 1839 amounting to $80." Smoothed folds. Very clean paper.

    More Information:

    John Swisher (1819-1891) immigrated to Texas with his family in 1833. During the Texas Revolution, Swisher and nearly a dozen men headed to relieve Travis at the Alamo, but upon reaching Gonzales on March 5, 1836, joined Sam Houston's army as part of Co. "H," First Regiment, Texas Volunteers, taking part in the Battle of San Jacinto. After the war, he worked for the Texas government as a clerk in the treasury department, the auditor's office, the Ninth Congress of the Republic of Texas, and during the Convention of 1845. He was appointed auditor of public accounts in 1848 and paymaster of the Texas Rangers from 1860 until secession.
