    Description

John E. Wool Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 8", "Fort Monroe", April [1862]. A war-dated letter concerning the housing of contrabands at Fort Monroe: "Captain Tallmadge will furnish lumber to the amount due to certain contrabands which Mr. Wilbur informs me they are willing to contract & will put up buildings for themselves." Around 1,500 freed slaves called Fort Monroe their home by 1862. Many were put to work by Wool, and as evidenced by this letter, they were willing to build their own shelters, if given the proper materials. Affixed to a slightly larger sheet along the left margin and a single spot on the right margin.
