John C. Pemberton War-Dated Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; "Hd. Qrs. Dept Miss & East La. Jackson Miss. M[ar]ch 30th 1863." A letter addressed to Union General Nathaniel Banks regarding a captured cargo of cotton. "A few days since a cargo of Cotton was seized by the troops of your Command at or near Pontchatoula. This Cotton was allowed by me to be exported, after the assurance was given that you would not interfere with the shipment of any cotton made under the guaranty of a Consul of a Foreign Government that the Cotton shipped shall bonafide go to a Foreign port and not in any way inure to the benefit of the U.S. Under these circumstances I have to ask that the cargo of cotton seized may be delivered up to the parties entitled to its control." Signed,"J.C. Pemberton."

A docket on the verso reads: "Reports prisoners in our hands who should be delivered up - cotton seized belonging to foreign subjects & enquired relative to the murderers of Majors Prados and Bauduc." Pemberton had written a second letter (not present) to Banks that same day regarding six Confederate prisoners that were supposed to have been released as part of an earlier agreement and inquires "whether an investigation has yet been made into the case of the murderers of Major Prados and Bauduc... on the steamer Virtue; and if so is it your intention to turn them over to the Confederate authorities." The two communications were likely delivered on the same day, and the docket on the letter offered here references both. At bottom of the docket is noted, "Rec'd April 10, 1863," indicating that the communications were forwarded elsewhere by Banks.

Condition: Flattened folds, and uneven toning. Partial separations along the folds have been repaired on verso. A few small chips along the left edge, not affecting any text.
